Recently, Kim & I have been answering many questions about her diet and exercise program. Many of you have wondered how she was able to transform her body. We felt that we were answering many quick questions, but in such brief encounters, were unable to give people all the tools necessary to make proper changes in their own lives. So, we decided to compile the information and present it in way that is easy to understand and can be customized for each of your individual lives, goals and schedules.

This workshop will not encourage you to eat exactly like a pre-show figure competitor. However, it will help you think like a figure competitor when making food choices. Our plan is not about deprivation, but about creating a set of self-imposed guidelines that will make eating well more convenient, more manageable and less complicated.

Wednesday, August 27th, 7pm tp 9pm (light dinner included) $45

Topics Include:

Clean Eating Basics

Meal Planning

Meal Timing

Portion Sizes

Keys to Boosting Metabolism

Science of Appetite

Eating Out

And More

You will leave the workshop with a clean eating binder that includes all of the information covered in the workshop, as well as recipes, menu samples and an individual meal- planning chart. Send me an email, give me a call or post on the forum if you’re interested!

The plant, Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi, is unique because, unlike normal plants, it captures most of its carbon dioxide at night when the air is cooler and more humid, making it 10 times more water-efficient than major crops such as wheat. Scientists will use the latest next-generation DNA sequencing to analyse the plant’s genetic code and understand how these plants function at night.

The project will generate a genome sequence database that will be used as an Internet resource for plant biologists throughout the world.

The research comes at a time when farmland across the globe normally used for growing food such as rice and wheat is being taken over by bio-fuel crops used for bioethanol production as a petrol substitute. Scientists believe that the novel genes found in Kalanchoe could provide a model of how bio-fuel plants could be grown on un-utilised desert and semi-arid lands, rather than on fertile farmland needed for producing food.

They’re all exercises at boot camp, an exercise program for ages 12 through adults offered at Fitness Playground, 204 N. Fifth St., Mebane.

Annie Luxmore, owner of Fitness Playground, described it as a six-week program which approaches exercise as a team activity.

“Boot Camp provides a team atmosphere and accountability. It’s a want-to- be-involved type class,” Annie said in a recent interview.
Annie got her inspiration from John Hinds at the Monkey Bar Gymnasium in Madison, Wis. She likes the boot camp atmosphere because it is not repetitive and she “hates the thought of being stuck in a gym.”

Classes are held three times a week for six weeks. Campers do a lot of different workouts. The Animal Workout involves scorpion push-ups, duck lunges, bear crawl and frog hops. The Farmer Workout requires wheelbarrows with weights that get heavy fast and carrying sandbags, which gets harder with every step. Escape from Alcatraz challenges campers to dig, crawl, run, swim and “escape” from the hour-long workout. In the Card Deck Workout, each suit stands for an exercise and when a card is drawn you must complete that exercise.

Strength & Conditioning is the Fitness Playground alternative to weightlifting, and the best way to gain functional strength. Participants learn how to use their own body weight and a few simple devices to build overall functional strength and functional power. Our strength exercises first focus on improving basic body alignment, then focus on functional strength, power, speed, and stability. Our training methods not only develop muscle, they develop overall functional strength and athleticism.

You are not on your own! The instructor will help keep you motivated, illustrate proper form, watch out for potential injuries, modify every exercise for each individual, and put you on the best path for true functional strength. It is like having a Personal Trainer every time you come to the gym. In addition, you will have a team in every class who will keep a watchful eye on each other as well as give feedback and encouragement.

If you are worried that you won’t be able to keep up in a class full of people who have been working out for a long time, don’t be. Every single exercise at the Fitness Playground will challenge your functional strength regardless of whether you are a seasoned athlete or have never worked out. Each movement has a progression focusing on building stability, functional strength, and power. The Fitness Playground is a fun place to be where making new friends is easy, social interaction is normal, and the environment is healthy. The variety of exercises and positive atmosphere will make you forget you are working out!

The local food movement typically has been about improving the health of the planet. Buying locally means less fuel burned to transport food, which means less pollution.

But now researchers are trying to find out if eating locally farmed food is also better for your health.

A team of researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received a grant to study the public health impact of moving toward a local, sustainable food system. An increasingly vocal local food movement calls for consumers to try to buy and eat foods produced within 100 miles of their homes.

DR. MARK TARNOPOLSKY, a muscle physiology researcher at McMaster University in Canada and a physician, knows all about the exhortations by supplement makers and many nutritionists on what to eat and when to eat it for optimal performance.

The idea is that you are supposed to consume carbohydrates and proteins in a magical four-to-one ratio during endurance events like a long run or bike ride, and right after. The belief is that such nutritional diligence will improve your performance and speed your recovery.

Dr. Tarnopolsky, a 45-year-old trail runner and adventure racer, might be expected to seize upon the nutritional advice. (He won the Ontario trail running series in 2004, 2005 and 2006.)

So might his colleague, Stuart Phillips, a 41-year-old associate professor of kinesiology at McMaster who played rugby for Canada’s national team and now plays it for fun. He also runs, lifts weights and studies nutrition and performance.
